A smart Grant will spend the first four years of his career either as an offensive lineman with the starting unit, as a backup running back, linebacker or safety, or as a receiver, offensive tackle, or guard before transitioning to cornerback.
“He takes his job seriously, his passion and his dedication. He is not going to be a guy that is gonna be doing this with the mindset, ‘My first game is going to be against Ohio State or Iowa or Northwestern,'” said former Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist said. “If that’s his mindset, that’s what he will not do because he’s a first-round talent that needs a year to develop.”
Sundquist noted that the Broncos have more than a dozen players in their top 11 overall draft class who are not going to play cornerback for the Broncos.
“At the end of the day, the players who are going to develop as a guy in the front-runner group are not going to be guys that are in the starting lineup,” Sundquist said. “Most of the players who are going to come off the board and become good starters are going to end up playing some sort of specialty position on day one and then move on.”
Sundquist, who interviewed for the Broncos’ general manager job earlier this year, believes the Broncos should take advantage of their own first-round class in 2015 — which boasts defensive end Derek Wolfe and offensive lineman Menelik Watson — and use those players as first-round receivers and pass rushers.
“Let’s take the guys who have more value on the first day, which I think you could do that a lot. Guys who have played a significant amount of time on one of the more successful teams in football like Denver. For example, Watson. He would have to be a big play every single day for me — maybe not a touchdown a game — to put him in the top 10 of the first round. He has played for two-time All-Pro Von Miller. Now, you see how hard he plays and how often he gets to the ball and how many sacks he has on tape. You have guys like that who are going to take you to the next level,” Sundquist said. “The draft isn’t about you or me, it’s about the team you’re playing for. That’s why I think you should take all young players and make sure you put them in a position where they can play on every single play.”
