Some people ask whether I was ever a horse? Yes.
(Forgive my ignorance. I was very young. I didn’t know anything at all)
My mother, who was not really that nice to me, gave me a pony named Rodeo as a wedding present and that horse won the Kentucky Derby in 1933. I later named my pony Rolly (I was a very lucky boy.) I had the mare put down and she just sat, not moving at all, and I could always tell how hungry her belly was by the way she breathed and how she always seemed to be looking off.
In the year 1936 I was riding home, and all of a sudden I was in front of a bunch of people. My mother shouted back to the others: “I just bought a horse. And Rolly’s gone. Rolly’s gone.” And it was one of those beautiful moments that I will never forget. (I was only eight years old.)
So, in all honesty, I must have lost the race.
In 1933 I bet some cash on my horse (I was a very big promoter) that he would win the Kentucky Derby that year. The other horse was not well and neither was he.
My bet was on the horse to win the race. I was right. It was that little dog, Rolly, who won the Kentucky Derby. I kept telling the other people the same thing. When I won the second race my father got a call on the telephone one afternoon and told me that I had won the race. I was so, so, so happy. My mother, who was just getting a drink, jumped around in an ecstatic, hysterical, happy mood.
I don’t know what I’m going to do with Rolly. He’s so big and strong. I’m going to have a hard time getting him to give me what I want (I need a horse to ride for a living!) So, why don’t you go back to your life and have plenty of fun there? I’m sure I’ll be back to take a job in a circus in the spring and a lot of fun.
If your horse gets hurt, will you care? What if it is badly infected? I wouldn’t let that happen to any of my horses. That would never happen.
If I lose a horse, have you had a few? Oh yeah, a lot of times. And not just after the money, of
