A lot of people think you could do it by yourself in the horse racing world. I would not, I have a lot of friends and a good relationship with the best newspaper owners of all the track owners.

How much horse racing does a newspaper make?

Yes it pays you for the newsstand subscriptions and whatnot, but what we make is what we make. We don’t make as much as the wire service. I would be happy to put that money back into the racing world as far as the newspaper coverage is concerned, but I don’t think that would be a money-making proposition. (Editor’s Note: This article was written before Peter Mearns of Racing Illustrated started a “news” section for horses and started taking a cut of the profit.)

Are you still a horse racing fan?

Oh my God, yeah, I’m as involved as ever. My kids go to as many races as I can, which is a little daunting in itself.

And what do you think of the new breed of newsman?

I know so much more about it than I did 20 years ago. The ones that have come in to the news, the kind of person that knows so much about racing, I think the ones who are the greatest are the ones who are good story-tellers and tell really good stories and really make the sport of horse racing as a place people go to have fun. I think that’s the kind of person who is really good. I still want to know everything about every race because I think every race has so much to tell them. I have had races that I went to as a kid and I can remember their names and all these things. It was very exciting to go for a story. Now you have so many more people that are so good.

Do you see more than two newspapers for every person that has access to the internet at every hour?

Yes, I see more now that there’s more and more information available on the internet than we did 20 years ago.

You used to have to go to two papers to stay informed. Now you don’t?

No, never. It’s so much easier now. We do have a couple of people that, they have websites and they go out and write about a race and then they go back in and write some editorial and they go out and put that on the website as well. They’ve done a good job of it. I always enjoy going
