I hear these labels, like, “Hey, rap is an urban, rap is a New York thing. I’m talking Brooklyn! That’s why my music sounds like this, or like that.” In my entire career, I am an East Coast musician. I came to New York in 2002. So, I’m coming from the city, I’m from the New York. I think a lot of artists get that label: “Whoa, New York, they’re looking at you as a rapper, but you’re making an indie record! Or, a country kid, they’re looking at rap. Like, this man just took an indie record to the big time.” But I’ve always been a musician. And I’m a musician who loves music.

I think there are many reasons why rap is called rap. I don’t think, in my opinion, that in 2013, there is no more hip hop than ever. I’ll never know. I might think that in 2003 and 2004, what came to my ears, I would say: “Wow! This is what people are paying $60 to listen to and love.” And I would love to see that. What would that sound like? “Let’s see this thing where I’m just making a record and I’m not even saying anything, I’m just saying the songs and it’s only in these three or four songs. We’ll see what happens.” Maybe that would be cool, because I would not want to have the word “rap” be so synonymous.

I think people look at my music and their perception is what they get. I’m not trying to push hip hop. I would love to be in a band and be in hip hop.
