It’s better than guitar, yeah! What’s the best thing about playing ukulele is the sound. It’s a really cool combination of what I’m trying to do and it’s like, “Okay, I love your guitar.” But I have my guitar to go to, and I feel comfortable with my instrument.

Eamon:

So you could do an instrumental version of any song on a guitar, you know?

Kurt:

Oh man, I can, yeah. I could do some jazz or something! I don’t really know. I’m not sure. That’s a good question. I like some jazz too. I liked what he did in “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine,” and I was thinking he sounds sort of like Keith Richards.

Eamon:

I also talked with the drummer for the album, Mike Whelan, and you seem very interested in writing and writing an album. He says you are writing, you know, one song per year. In a few years, when the record is finished, you could go back and do one less song to finish.

Kurt Heyerdahl:

Yeah, we talked about recording in my life. I don’t have a schedule.

Eamon:

Did you think you would end up making more records than you do now?

Kurt:

No, I didn’t think of that.

Eamon:

It’s cool, Kurt.

Kurt:

Yeah.

Eamon:

That’s the thing about the music industry, is that it’s a lot more like a race. I just found a clip of you making your movie in Vancouver, but in London. And the clip ended up being on the Today Show, with the singer Miley Cyrus. At one point she calls herself a “jerk” because of the way she’s been called.

Yeah?

And you say that you don’t get mad about it.

Kurt:

Yeah, well I mean, I’ve grown up in a public place all my life. I don’t go to clubs.
