I am a student and want a high quality ukulele in a budget that can be used the long term and is comfortable to play with.

What should I avoid? For most people, I wouldn’t recommend anything cheap. The only thing that I would avoid is the cheaper brands that seem to have been used for years and are very cheaply made, or those that have been out of production for years and seem cheaply made. I wouldn’t recommend new ukuleles. Even if the quality is better than the old one or they are a lot cheaper, it is still a risky venture and will likely end in damage to your ukulele(s).

What type of teacher do you prefer? In general I prefer teachers that have experience and an understanding of the instrument. In some cases I might prefer to be taught by a teacher that has been teaching Ukuleles for a long time and knows what works and doesn’t work. That way I can learn faster, and my teacher will be able to answer my questions and help me learn new things. If I find someone that I like and can work with, and they have some good music knowledge, I might choose that person for my first teacher. I can get along with most people even if my teacher doesn’t like me, so it’s a matter of familiarity rather than a dislike for people.

Have you ever played any other instruments? For the most part, I really don’t. I like playing as much as possible, and not getting too into it. But I would have to say that one of the first things I had to learn is to keep playing while sitting down as opposed to standing so that my fingers don’t get tired. I have also learned to play the flute, which I used to play for a little while, but for the most part learned to just play the ukulele for the most part. I started playing the flute in the early 90s.

Was there any particular instrument that made a lasting impression on you? My favourite instrument to this day is the ukulele. The ukulele is one of my favourite musical instruments. But if I had to say, it would be my guitar. I’m quite sad that I didn’t get to play it in college, because I was very, very much into playing the ukulele for an hour before I would go home.
