New Delhi: The Centre has moved the Supreme Court against the Maharashtra government’s move to bring the entire district of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj into the Maharashtra Act.

The Centre along with the state government moved the high court stating that the state would be violating the provisions of Indian Constitution guaranteeing freedom of religion and expression.

The state government has moved the Supreme Court saying that the Act could not be changed at a time when the Shiv Sena demands that the Sena government in Maharashtra be banned.

According to the high court order, the state has sought a stay of the order of September 9, 2014, passing the Maharashtra Act on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Act (AMLA).

On April 15, 2014, Maharashtra was forced to introduce the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Act in view of its ongoing agitation in Mumbai.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Act had made the Maharashtra Act to contain a clause banning the movement and manifestation of Shree Ram Janmabhoomi and other religious organisations. The Shiv Sena had earlier said that these were banned organisations. They demanded that the state ban all such organisations and all their affiliated organisations, while the Maharashtra government had to respond to the demand. The state government then passed the
