DETROIT — The Detroit Lions didn’t have to look long at the scoreboard for their final drive when they ran out of time.
First-round picks Ezekiel Ansah and Michael Burton combined to rush for 138 yards and touchdown on 10 carries in overtime of the team’s 17-16 season finale against the Indianapolis Colts, giving Detroit (7-7) the most productive rushing attack of the season.
“It was an amazing thing to see,” Detroit coach Jim Caldwell said, “and for us obviously to go on to go into last week’s (Super Bowl) game.”
Ansah, in his second season out of Ohio State, has gained at least 100 yards in each of his first three games, with the only loss coming against the Jacksonville Jaguars for Ansah to a knee injury late in the season. The third-year pro has rushed for 3,927 yards this season in 13 games, averaging a career-high 4.4 yards per carry.
“He’s had that consistency we talked about before this game, and the confidence,” Caldwell said, “and we can’t afford to throw him out there with 10 minutes left in the game.”

Burton, fifth in the NFL rushing list with 1,933 yards, was credited with one touchdown with 1:27 remaining when he had to take a shoulder inbounds on a 1-yard gain with 1:33 left in regulation and then turned to make a 15-yard field goal. As part of the play, the Lions called timeout after running another zone read to try to slow him down.
“He knew what he was up against,” offensive coach Jim Bob Cooter said. “He knew what he had to do — but he just executed it.”
It was Burton’s fourth touchdown as a second-year player, his sixth run of 20 yards or more and his second rushing touchdown since he arrived in Detroit in the offseason. His second-touchdown score was his second rushing score of the season to go with his touchdown, while his one-yard touchdown run at the 1-yard line was his second of the year to go with his touchdown.
