One method involves using the following trick that’s been around since the 70s.

If you hold your finger in the space between your thumb and pinky and squeeze (this is the “squeeze” part), your finger will form an ‘X’ shape, so don’t overdo it like I did. This works well in the space between the thumbs when holding them at the same place (this is not the same thing as the “X” in a puppet face) It’s also very useful when you’re holding these two hands in the same hand so you don’t have to hold them in different positions to get a puppet’s face to turn up.

But, it takes some practice, and may sound like a pain.

I prefer to use a simple, non-invasive, and easy technique.

My favorite place to use the “smile” is on the side of the face – that’s the place you’ll see the pinky, and the fingers.

So here’s my method

-Put your thumb on the top of your pinky and apply pressure with your pinky fingers to create the “X” shape.

-Smile!

-Pull your fingers out slightly (no, I’m not squeezing!), and push the thumb against your thumb.

-You can now move your hand sideways. You can also use the “X” to create the “M” or “L” shape to create extra space. It may take a couple of times to adjust to, but in time you’ll get the hang of it.

As I mentioned, this is not the only method, and is by no means a one-size fits all. There are as many ways to use your pinky fingers to make a puppet face, including holding at a different distance with your thumbs. However the “X” will give you one way to form the “M” on your puppets, and I think you can do that too.

As an example, take another look at the puppet below. Now look at how I hold my two hands. I hold them with the left hand at the side, and the right hand at the top. There are three main ways to do this.
