If you believe you’re doing a great job of learning something, and you want to go out and work hard doing it, yes. And if you’re looking for a way to make a lot more money than you might in the “real world” (where your job might be “shopping” in the mall or waiting tables at a restaurant chain), well, maybe so. I don’t know, and so I just don’t.

And that’s not to say you should stop attending classes that are free—it really is a great way to make friends with people who are passionate about the same things you are. A friend of mine is a musician who taught a class that I did at University of Texas at Austin and it was incredibly fun and inspiring—including the last lesson, where I sang to a real live audience.

I was able to make a lot of money while I was at the same school, but it wasn’t really a “good” way to spend my free time. My goal is to figure that out. Will it be fun or painful to take a class that no one can afford? Will it be important or meaningless in the grand scheme of life? What is it that drives you?

If the answer is “anything,” then take classes. You’ll never know until you try.
