Yes, a huge number of great galleries have free (or low cost) online paint classes to help the artist improve their skills, and there are lots of resources online to help you find some great tutorials and tips. The problem is with that free paint classes comes with a certain amount of risk, and when you start adding layers of painting to your free courses, you risk losing what made paint a great medium in the first place. It’s possible if you take enough classes to learn how to keep things simple for your painting.
What’s the best way to learn?
First and foremost is to go to your local art school first. Get to know about the art scene that is around you and ask any questions any of the people here have that might be helpful. There is always new and interesting information to be found online, but some of that comes from friends of friends. So when you have people that you already trust, like artists that you know, go to them and ask them. You’ll also find that many people aren’t aware of some of the best paint classes out there and there are plenty of great paintings out there to give you inspiration. It just takes time and a lot of effort to develop new techniques, and to learn how good you can become. Even some of the more popular classes are just as hard as painting for the first time, or more difficult if you have never touched a brush and are just starting out. Even art school classes can be expensive if you take them a lot, but once you have, it won’t cost you much compared to painting. That said, it is easy to become a great painter if you give it 100% because the reward outweighs any cost.
What’s to not do?
Don’t let yourself get frustrated with the slow growth or the fact that you were only really interested in painting for painting’s sake. Some people have more time than others to paint and you know what? There is a reason why painting has such a low rate of completion. Don’t give up. If you work for a year and it takes you 2 or 3 sessions to make your piece, take it slow. Don’t panic, it happens to people, and learn from it. A few bad assignments can keep you from being an artist, and it will eventually improve. Also read “The Art of Painting” by Robert Frank for some great tips.
