There once was once a time when the world would talk about the great European project; the European project of peace, free trade, and democracy. That is what Europe is supposed to look like to the rest of the world. A time when all nations would work together to ensure that the rule of law prevailed.
The current day, that project is a mirage. That is because, while the EU has been the greatest single economic achievement of the 20th century, and one of the most inspiring examples in global democracy, it will not survive any longer — not even for many generations to come. While Europe’s economy now produces more than 20% of the world’s gross domestic product, we no longer live in Europe. We live in a world that is changing faster than Europe ever did.
