How do you begin a painting on clay? Well, you just begin with any old canvas and paint. A little dusting, some paint, just a little bit of water. We have clay and we have fine sand and so forth, but nothing so crazy as mixing clay and sand that is going to be so hard when it dries to be something that you can put a brush on. Let’s look at a little bit of clay. I’m going to show you how you can put a brush on a clay model and start drawing with it. Okay. First you lay a thin layer of clay flat to the floor, or any surface that gets moist. That’s going to be your starting area. How do you get a brush to do what you want, or just a little bit of movement to a brush that has been used before? Paint it! Painting a painting on any clay model is pretty simple. It’s the easiest thing you can do. The process starts when you wet the model with paint. Then you lay it over a few small rocks, and when you put out those little rocks, that kind of wet the surface of the clay, and it dries. You pour some water into the clay, and then you apply a little bit of paint. And that kind of drys it. The best way to do it is with our little brush, to give you a light motion. You put a little bit of paint on a little bit of clay. So you put your brush over the area, and you get that little movement. Now you paint, and the paint will cover the whole surface. You brush the paint away, and it goes back and forth. You’ll get a little bit of movement. If you do it in a few quick strokes, that’s the way you’ll get a brush to do more. It depends on the kind of clay you have. The most common type of clay is called ‘pale’ or ‘medium’ clay. That is very smooth, and it has a lot of movement. It’s pretty easy to paint, but it’s not very strong. It’s quite strong, to the point that it can hold its shape. If you have drywall that’s wet, or a real bad wet wall, you’ll have to do a lot of work to get a clay effect. If you do it yourself, you can get some very good movement and color with a clay pot. However, some clay doesn’t get very much movement at all. So you have to use a really
