Is writing easier than speaking? If so, how do you get them both done?

The problem with trying to get all these different skill sets done at once is that it requires too much time and effort. If you’re trying to learn how to use Photoshop (i.e. draw a cartoon) versus writing a novel, then it’s probably best to try to get the two at the same time, in order to ensure that you reach the right balance between the two. For the same reason, it’s not a good idea to try to learn both singing and reading, if your goal is just getting better in both these skills. Even though they sound very similar, there are ways to bring them together.

Asking Yourself if you’re a “Workaholic”

Another way to think about the issue is to find out if you’re a person really driven to finish things. Asking yourself such questions about your motivation is a good way to decide if you’re actually the kind of person who’s always working on the projects you want to work on.

If you don’t answer, then probably you’re not someone driven to complete whatever it is that you want to do. This way, you’ll probably know which areas to focus yourself on and which areas to ignore as far as work-life balance goes.

For example, if you’ve always wanted to be a songwriter, but have never gotten the chance to truly write your own songs and put them out on the world (with the exception of playing guitar and singing), then you’re probably not looking for a job right now. This means you should probably try to work on something else, such as cooking, studying, exercising, or whatever else is occupying your attention at the moment.

Instead, you should start writing lyrics and songs now and build up the experience in the meantime.

The point about the list is that it’s not an exhaustive list of everything you should do as a freelance artist – nor is it even close. All your various needs need to be balanced out together; otherwise, you’ll end up with something completely different than what you want out of it.
