I want you to tell me what’s easier for you?

I mean it’s hard to judge a person who has only done two years of art school as opposed to 40 years, and my theory is that because the things we learn in school affect our lives — our careers, our education, our lives in general — that is what matters.

So you had to have a career to get where you are now.

I don’t know if you ever read one of mine, but I’m not doing anything you couldn’t do in high school and college.

Right. If you are so proud of that you must be doing well. So when does your next art piece go up?

Well, if I were you, I’d be going up with both hands tied behind my back. Why is that?

It’s because every painting is a challenge. Every painting is something you struggle against. When you start with your fingers and toes pressed against the paper and then you have to get it up and put down, there is something inherently new to it and you have to do something new. And you really can’t. The problem with painting is you can’t.

So what do you have to offer?

What I want you to do is understand that there are people who make paintings of their life that aren’t necessarily my life. And that they’re not living in it because that’s what they choose to do.

What the hell would they need to take away?

The difference is that no one is making a painting of me to sell me. I get to give them exactly what I see myself. And I also have access to a whole bunch of other artists who, like me, have similar experiences they’ve chosen to bring to the world.

You can’t just get somebody else’s life.

I mean, you can but what I see is that people say, “Look, I’m trying to capture this feeling in it.” And I see that’s not the truth. So what I do is I tell them I’m not the person I’m trying to capture in it. It’s the experience I’m interested in. How I would have been affected had these people actually been there, or at the very least, the people who had been present when these things happened?
