These are small, hand drawn, hand painted words or drawings that are often used as street art. Their size and type is different from graffiti to graffiti to vandalism. Sometimes it looks like random graffiti, or it can be very detailed or artistic. They can also show that the person was a member of an activist group. But these tags are very important for documenting graffiti history.

Where can I look to see more of the artwork of the early graffiti artists? There are various galleries in London where I’m trying to find the original art, but I hope to do something about this soon. You can also browse some more of the original graffiti art at the London street artist group, London Art for Living.

Some artists who made early graffiti artwork include:

John Smith, a famous muralist in New York City. His most famous works can be seen on walls from the 1960s to 1990s. Smith’s “Street Art” were on the street and in the museum of Art in London. (Wikipedia)

Paul Jones (aka The Manic Street Preacher, a great graffiti artist in the 1970s and 80s)

Ki-Mulana, an activist who lived in London during the 1970s. (Wikipedia)

Ruth and Rufus

Sketchy, quirky and sometimes funny, these two artists have had a good influence on a lot of graffiti. Ruth and Rufus were both arrested because they were writing their names in an unusual way. (Wikipedia)

Ki-Mulana was arrested in 1994, for writing in the middle of the road. He was eventually sentenced to 3 years in prison.
