The real question is, does he consider the United States an ally or a threat to Israel’s strategic interests? As the Obama administration has done, he has said that an attack on Israel’s nuclear weapons facilities could trigger a U.S.-Israel strike, a statement that Israel is likely to interpret as a call for military action. Obama has also said that he would veto an UN Security Council resolution that would call for an Israeli strike. To be sure, a U.S.-Israel strike on Iran’s nuclear plants would trigger a regional arms race, a potential nuclear arms race in which regional powers, particularly China and India, might be emboldened to challenge the United States. But, after eight years of war and two devastating wars, the U.S.-Israel relationship today is in many respects stronger than at any time since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Even the United States, its ally, and its main threat to Israel’s self-determination as a Jewish state. This is perhaps most obvious in the case of Iran. Under current circumstances, the United States and Israel could hardly be much nearer to a nuclear deal, and we have a better chance than ever of achieving one. The most crucial question therefore is whether Obama regards America’s relationship with Israel as more of a threat to Israel’s survival, or less.

This is a good time to remind myself of the basic distinction between being an ally and being a threat. A great deal of American support for Israeli security has to do with its non-military security. A great deal of American support for Israel’s non-military security has to do with their defense industrial base.

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard President Obama state that the United States is not an enemy. He is simply telling Israeli politicians and citizens to vote for him, knowing the U.S. is never going to attack Israel, no matter what happens.
