A man who was arrested this morning and charged with shooting and killing a security guard at an Illinois McDonald’s was a suspect in the shooting death of a female guard in Chicago a week earlier, according to the FBI.

Johnathan James “Jack” Smith, 25, of Chicago was charged with attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm in the death of 32-year-old David Brown of Chicago, who was shot dead after an altercation with security officers at the fast food restaurant earlier this month, according to the FBI.

Smith was arrested shortly after 6 a.m. and remains in the DuPage County Jail in Chicago, which was the FBI’s field office in Chicago and the scene where Brown was shot.

“This defendant is a known, violent, criminal suspect who was seen on the video recording from the McDonald’s at which shots were fired,” Lisa Monaco, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Chicago office, said in a statement. “An eyewitness, who provided security at the McDonald’s, was fired upon and a security guard was shot and killed.”

Smith and two other men were charged today in Chicago after a surveillance video that authorities say is related to Brown’s death was released by Cook County prosecutors. According to the FBI’s statement, they were involved in an incident that occurred between 11:52 and 11:56 p.m. July 31 at the McDonald’s at 6010 W. Lawrence Avenue, which is at the intersection of Lawrence Avenue and Harlem Avenue.

Lawyers for the three men and Brown’s family said the video contains a “deplorable and disturbing footage of a violent incident between the two parties that occurred on the same business and where security officers were engaged in an altercation with the victims” and that the charges should not be made public based on public-records laws.

A Cook County circuit court judge ordered the video released to ABC News today, stating in court documents that the prosecution cannot make its information public because the case involves pending litigation.

The video, according to the federal indictment, shows a man exiting the vehicle and then walking toward a female employee while yelling racial and sexist comments. According to the FBI, one guard, identified in the indictment as Tiffany Thomas, was struck, while other people inside the vehicle have been asked to leave because they were not cooperating with federal agents.
