If you don’t know, scalping is the practice of selling goods, usually in bulk, for a lower price than the price paid for the same items in a regular market.
These days, the government has passed laws to stop the illegal activities. This has resulted in a rise in the number of people who are selling unbranded, small goods on eBay and Craigslist. These are usually stolen goods and many of them are not even genuine products, so the items are sold through an auction website where the buyer can claim the item for free (with a 10% premium).
In some regions, scalping is prohibited. However, in many other regions, there is still a large market for this activity — it is illegal, but still very lucrative.
Why is scalping illegal?
Scalping is illegal by default in many places. However, a lot of things can contribute to an increase in the illegal activity of selling stolen goods. In the USA alone, there are about 70,000 people who have been convicted of illegally reselling stolen goods.
Some of these people sell the goods they stole, and some of them just have a few more items to sell — for instance, they might have an older computer, a used phone, a stolen iPhone, an old TV, and so on. All these items can be expensive to replace, so these people will always be selling something cheap on eBay and Craigslist.
As a result, the illegal activities can grow very large very fast, and can take out the whole market for these items. In some cases, this is especially a problem since it is not always easy to identify which items were stolen. Also, it is not only illegal to resell stolen goods, but it is also illegal to try to re-sell it if you had the intention to sell it at an original price.
In some regions, a lot of people, especially the elderly and the physically handicapped, steal goods, and people also often buy stolen goods. Because of these reasons, it is easy to get caught — and thus people are often caught in the process of illegally reselling stolen goods.
In some other regions, scalping is legal, and because there are so many people who illegally resell, this law is enforced very widely. For instance, in Germany, there are many different categories of illegal sellers — from those who resell “unauthorized” goods, through people who sell only to friends and contacts, people who resell stolen
