The first-ever live concert at a major Canadian city may have been more a political statement than a performance, but it was also an exciting show for Toronto’s art community.
A two-hour concert – an amalgamation of rock, dance and theater – was staged last week for the Canadian Cultural Centre on the grounds of Exhibition Place on the downtown’s University Avenue side.
The concert was intended as a way to commemorate the centennial of the arrival of 1,051 Chinese labourers to Toronto to work on Ontario’s railway system.

The concert was part of a series of events marking the city’s 150th anniversary and was co-sponsored by the Arts Commission of Ontario and the Toronto Arts Council.
It also offered what organizers called “a chance to share a love of music and art, and a passion for Canada’s rich cultural heritage.”
They wanted to showcase live performances of the city’s artists over three distinct and diverse genres of music: Americana, Canadiana, and jazz.
