I have some experience with running the latest versions of various Linux distributions. Most of them have a newer “core” release each year (e.g. 4.7), but some don’t (e.g. 3.5 or 2.8.14). As with many things the newer and better Linux distributions have more and better utilities (but that’s another discussion altogether). In any case, here are the “official” versions of every major Linux distribution (i.e. no distros with a “buggy” build or “unofficial” build). These are usually the more stable and stable versions.
If your distribution doesn’t have a version number, you can just use a URL (e.g. https://www.ubuntu.com/ ), but keep in mind that many distros’ websites require you to enter a version number.
My “official” distribution is Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, released in March 2013. That gives it a version number of 16.04.x . Ubuntu is the default distribution for most Linux servers, and has been for many years.
