As is the case with most hobbies, it is quite a bit more work to learn carpentry than to buy a piece of equipment. I find that people who have been to carpentry school are very helpful for me in terms of learning how to work with wood, which is how I build these structures. I can usually make a lot of structures using just a couple of hand tools. In a garage shop, I might spend half an hour on the tools to build one, while someone who has never used a hand saw could do it in five hours.

Can you teach me about building and using carpentry tools?

I am only beginning to experiment with all of the tools available to me. I have used wooden chisels and file knives, but I will eventually start using a grinder. I still have a good deal of interest in learning how to use a power saw, which will come in useful later on. When my interest wanes, I will switch to cutting sheets of wood out of 3/4-inch plywood.

How can I tell if my house is made of wood or wood-based materials?

Before I begin to build some structure, I look for a few things that could indicate that it could be made of wood. First, can I put a bolt through the roofing, roof trusses, or similar stud structures? Then take an X-acto knife and mark any structures that look like it is made of wood. If they’re not wood, then it will need some other type of construction or repair. If you’re building a shed, take a 4-in. x 4-in. x 8-in. strip of corrugated plywood and mark all exposed studs. This will help you determine whether or not it will be wood or wood-based. My goal is to build several simple structures and then make them look wood-based.

What do you do when you get a home for your carpentry shop?

If you have never built or remodeled a structure before, you’re at a real disadvantage. Most homeowners who have purchased the shop are already quite experienced. I try not to impose too much on them, but if they need it, then I will help. I can help with a whole lot of things, including plumbing and electrical, if they ask. I can also help with furniture, if things seem to fall apart or need to be repainted. I can also assist customers if they have a problem
