I can. I do like making stuff. I’ve made enough to be doing something productive for a living.

But you need more experience than that?

No, it’s the same thing with the other skills you need to have to design. You need knowledge of different skills or you need to have some sort of skill of designing. They both require different levels of skills.

Can you use your design skills to do other things you’d like to do?

Definitely. When I was starting to teach architecture, I was using the skills I knew — but there were times I wasn’t using them well. That was hard to learn. It’s hard to learn anything that you don’t practice. The only way I was ever doing this was through art and literature. It was a slow process of slowly learning those things. I think if you have that education and experience, you can use this knowledge to go to other areas you want to learn about design.

Design doesn’t have to be this formalized process. If you see one building and you have a strong idea of what it’s going to be, then you might make more design decisions around that. For example if you’re designing a school, that makes a lot more sense if you’re designing a school rather than something like a college. You have an idea of what you want to do with that building and then you can decide what you want to do on the inside of it. There’s a lot more design decisions that way.

That’s definitely a big step up compared to anything else you can do.

It is. I think it’s hard to understand how much of an impact you can have on society. It’s hard to understand that it does impact society. For people who haven’t had the chance to learn about design, I’m not even sure what it means. But it does, and so do lots of other different things.
