This is where there’s a difference in practice. While a business can do that, a person cannot. As a personal project, I’ve had a long and successful career in woodcarving and my clients have been very happy to pay me for the labor. I was even able to help an older lady repair one of her stained glass. There are few ways you can do the same for yourself (as many people know who work in furniture shops or carpenters who use a lot of glue), but they’re also expensive. A business that can offer the same services at a low cost can offer higher returns.

I also found that people who do it for free had less experience and knowledge. If you’re new to woodworking and would like to learn how, I’d recommend one of the “Learn From The Pros” courses. I can’t promise they’ll be free, but as my clients can attest, I believe their advice is worth the cost.

How do you get started?

I had a couple of people tell me it was too hard. Maybe you don’t, but I have had many people tell me it was too easy. That’s fine, I would be the first one to tell you that! I’m not going to sit here and tell you how to learn about crafts or get started in one. It’s a process for beginners. If you ask me, you should be using one of the free books on home improvement.

If you want to spend more than 10 mins, there are many companies doing projects for free. I recommend books such as “Home Improvement” by Larry Miller, but I also want to mention some other options.

I used a piece of plywood, an angle grinder, and a router table and then I glued a piece of 2×4 to a piece of 2×4 to make a shelf. I used a bit of cement to fill in the “dead” surface areas.
