MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican investigators launched a criminal investigation into the deaths of about 40 people suspected of drug trafficking during a raid on a drug lab in the central state of Chiapas last month, killing at least 25 people and injuring 15 others.

Mexico’s state prosecutor, Jesús Murillo Karam, said there was no indication that the deaths in the June 15 raid in the town of Huauxca were the work of organized crime groups.

A second raid in the nearby mountains in the same time frame killed as many as 40 people.

The bodies of 15 people found in the southern state of Chihuahua have since been identified as that of a drug lab employee who was reportedly abducted and killed by cartel assassins early in the drug war.

“At least 25 people were killed in the Huauxca case, one at the drug lab,” Murillo Karam said.

More than 200 police, army and other officials have been injured during the raid, and more than 1,000 people were detained in drug-related operations during their raids in the past month, he said.

Murillo Karam said the raid was part of the ongoing investigation into the deaths, in which “members of several gangs” were killed.

Chihuahua was one of the main targets of the wave of violence that has wracked the country since late last year and spread throughout the state during President Enrique Peña Nieto’s two-year term.

President Barack Obama on Wednesday visited the city from Mexico City and met with officials of Chiapas to reassure them that the U.S. government would provide assistance to Mexico’s troubled southern region.

Tens of thousands of Mexicans have been killed during Mexico’s war on drugs, which began with a wave of raids carried out in 2010 and has since led to tens of thousands of arrests and about 12,000 deaths.

It’s rare for a federal prosecutor to launch a criminal investigation. In recent months, however, dozens of Mexico’s police forces have been involved in the drug war, while a handful of prosecutors have been put on leave temporarily
