For the first time, the FBI is investigating potential links between Trump’s campaign and Russian officials, in an investigation that could see the president impeached and possibly removed from office if he is found guilty.
FBI Director Robert Mueller met last night with President Trump at the White House, CNN reported Monday night. The two discussed FBI issues that include “election integrity” and “ongoing investigations into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia,” according to a source familiar with the meeting.
The FBI has been looking into alleged coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia in some form since October. Since then, it has obtained three indictments against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy Rick Gates. Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos plead guilty to 12 felony charges related to their work for Ukraine after admitting to lying to the FBI. They are scheduled to testify next week in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
As part of the case, Manafort was charged with 12 counts, including one for money laundering and four that deal with the work of former Ukrainian politician and current presidential candidate, Yulia Tymoshenko. Manafort was also convicted in 2015 of tax evasion in the U.S. and of failing to register as a foreign agent, a charge he has denied.
The indictment alleges that the Trump campaign agreed to provide funding to the Ukrainian political party as part of an arrangement between the Russians and the Trump campaign’s political action committee.
The indictment states that the Russians used a pro-Russia political party in the US to achieve their goal. This is not the first time that the FBI’s interest in the Trump team and Russia has been reported. The Washington Free Beacon reported in February that Mueller will also look into the Russian effort to influence the 2016 election and possible possible contacts between the president’s team and Russians.
Mueller is said to have a number of sources in the FBI who are willing to testify to his investigation. The Washington Post reported last week that at least three of the indictments and guilty pleas have had links to Trump associates, though the Washington Post said that some of these cases are more serious than others and that not all are tied directly to the president.
