There are many choices, but I’d pick one that makes sense and is a fun name. Some names like Milta or Wylie are pretty awesome, with great sounding names, but they’re not quite as easy to spell. You will need to think about whether you are going to use a specific name that is already in use elsewhere in the woodworking world (such as the one I used for this product), or whether you will be changing the name yourself. I would stick to names that are not in common use anywhere that you might make a new business/product. For example, the name I used for this product was a “Vintage Carriage Wheel.” But that name is too common to make another brand (like “Wylie Tools”) an option.
How long have you been making woodworking tools? I’m guessing you probably have 20 to 30 odd years experience, right?
Yes, I’m guessing I have 20 or 30 years experience, but I’ve probably been doing it now for over 40. I’ve really come to appreciate what I do with this product over the years. One of the things I’ve come to love about woodworking is the art of turning wood into something beautiful and functional. I love the creative process of turning wood, the process and tools required, and just the overall pleasure of working on stuff. I find it so exciting that I have been able to share this passion with others, and I am honored to be part of the community through this site.
Do you have a favorite or least favorite tool?
One of the biggest regrets is not having the best tool! My favorite tool is probably my Vise-Grip. For years, it is the tool I used most and kept. However, over time I’ve grown fond of the other tools I use and how the tools come together. I prefer not to go through a tool-case cycle of getting new tools and then going through a tool-case cycle of putting them away. I find this very disheartening, but it is also very rewarding. I also enjoy using small, simple tools for my own things, and using them for larger projects that need a lot of specialized or heavy maintenance. I often think about “I should have made that tool years ago…
